FECOF: Strengthening the resilience of forests in the face of climate change requires effective support and economic perspectives for forest owners

Two topics play a central role in the forest-related political discussions at EU level in the light of the "Green Deal": Climate change and biodiversity. Forests are of great importance in both areas. In mid-November 2020, the FECOF members came together via video conference to discuss which course should be set in the context of the new EU Forest Strategy in order to successfully meet the challenges of forest management in times of climate change.

There was great agreement that in times of uncertainty, adaptive forest management based on the state of knowledge is required to maintain and develop forest ecosystem services for society and nature. Since also municipal forest operations can barely meet this task of the century solely by the income of their current business areas, new instruments of support are required that give forest owners a perspective even in times of crisis. FECOF’s basic political demands are summarized in the following position paper.
