He outlined the difficult situation of forest owners in the face of enormous forest damage over the past two years. With a view to the “Green Deal” of the Commission and the elaboration of a new EU Forest Strategy, the President recommended a stronger support of forest owners from politics and society. Therefore, he emphasized the need for a more holistic view on forestry at EU level in order to meet the challenges of climate change and the increasing social demands on forest all over Europe. A strong future Forest Strategy is of vital importance to minimize conflicting goals caused by inconsistency in EU policies. The guiding principle should always be a multifunctional, sustainable forestry, since one-sided views will not do justice to the diversity and functionality of European forests. As forest owners are directly affected by political decisions in Brussels and nationally, the FECOF President demanded an active involvement of forest ownership in the development of political strategies. Finally, the EU's forest-related goals can only be achieved together with those who are responsible for the necessary implementation measures on site.
